Jerald Florence: Sugar is vegan. Anything is vegan as long as it does not contain any meat or animal products. Sugar is made from a plant. What you need to look for is how the sugar was refined.
Donte Hamme: The claims relating to sugar are due to the use of bone char in the filtering of the sugar which, in turn, makes "white sugar". Technically raw sugar should not be filtered and is classified as vegan. However the use of bone char has decreased significantly over the past few decades as cheaper, more efficient filtering methods have taken the place of bone char. As a result there are many white sugars available that are vegan and today many vegans consider sugar to be a vegan product as a result. As stated in previous answers beet sugar has never been filtered through bone char and has always been vegan....Show more
Marna Liddie: Sugar is VEGAN, eat up!! Beware of honey, though, capiche?
Freeman Rutkin: Your question is off-topic. This is the beer! , wine and spirits area.
Marcel Then: "Vegans please help?"It doesn't actually require that people be vegans to help you, a number of us "meat eaters," can also help. Now most refined sugar is vegan suitable, as bone char isn't used for the refining of cane sugar. Many companies have gone to less expensive filtering systems, that either use a fiber filter, or even charcoal, for the filtering of sugar. The cost of making bone char, is much higher, than to make charcoal. Also with the fiber filters, they can also be cleaned, and reused several times, versus bone char, and even charcoal. However if you want to be certain, you can buy beet sugar, which doesn't need to be filtered to make it white....Show more
Russel Gajate: Sugar itself is vegan however, you may have a problem with some sugars as they are filtered through bone char (bone char is basically animal bone turned into ash by high heat).
Tobie Oshea: beet sugar is vegan; always has been just because ! it doesn't need to be whitened at all.cane sugar used to be wh! itened with bone char but I have read that this process is not used as much any more.http://veganproducts.org/sugar.html
