Abel Adger: Every little bit helps. If they could come up with a plan to make a good solar car that could store enough energy to be able to run at night, it would be similar to an electric car without the disadvantages of a higher electric bill. Also, talk of a car that could run on plain water and turn the emissions into something that isnt bad for the environment would also be wonderful. But if that ever does happen, we are probably years away from learning how to do that. And once we do, the cost of making a car like that, not everyone would be able to afford. It takes time for changes to happen....Show more
Nancy Mansell: It's not so much that they are good for the environment, as it is that they are better for the environment than a purely gas powered vehicle. This is due to the vehicle emitting less pollution than purely gas powerred vehicles. It also curbs overall consumption of gasoline, which lowers demand. This means less refining, and less transport of oi! l which reduces the risk of devastating spills such as the Exxon one in Alaska. Lastly although not an environmental issue it helps stem the cash flow out of the industrialized nations into the middle eastern countries that are much less politically stable. Ultimately some of this cash finds it's way into the hands of fundamentalists. Not feeding wealth into unstable regions is good for everyone on the planet....Show more
Logan Bero: nope, no car is good. even if one car is, there is way too many humans using normal cars daily. the environment is screwed either way
Devon Kalberer: No there defiantly not, few things are. even a solar powered car witch sounds carbon neutral will still need to be built therefore producing emissions.
Marcellus Exler: I've asked the same question, and found that the mining of lithium for the batteries is relatively benign. It may even be possible to clean up mine tailings in the process! People probably aren't going to give up! cars, and IMO shouldn't have to, so I'm in favor of staggerin! g work shifts to minimize rush hours, more and more efficient cars, etc. What's needed to improve transportation efficiency is business leadership, and there's little motivation due to transition costs and (currently) higher overall costs compared to petroleum products. Everybody knows the problems associated with them, but very few want to bet the farm on whatever might replace them....Show more
Indira Wassell: NO! Hybrid vehicles are not good for the environment at all!!! You might think that they use less oil and use electricity that's rechargeable so it's good for the environment. Well, just the process of making the extraordinary battery that powers this car uses way more electricity than the car uses in its ENTIRE lifetime!! Think about THAT!
Fritz Hawkey: The environmentalist said so.
Miguel Densley: If you compare a brand new Prius and a second hand Toyota Tercel, you would have to drive 100,000 miles before the Prius becomes better for the environm! ent then the second hand Tercel. This is because it takes at least 113 million BTU's of energy to produce any new car so a Prius has already burnt 1,000 gallons of gasoline before it has even moved out of the factory. Also, economy cars from 1982 had better mileage then the Prius. Gas mileage has been down hill ever since Reagan. Go figure....Show more
